چکیده

Deep-sea mining is an emerging marine industry that presents particularly complex challenges due to its multi-faceted technological, scientific, environmental, social, industrial, political, economic and legal aspects, all of which must be addressed to achieve commercially viable results. These aspects are governed by the burgeoning regulatory regime promulgated by the International Seabed Authority, with consequent effects on operating conditions. This presentation describes the three principal deepsea metal-bearing hard mineral deposits that are of the most immediate interest to the deep-sea mining industry, i.e., ferro-manganese (Fe-Mn) nodules, cobalt (Co)-rich Fe-Mn crusts and polymetallic sulphides, and their distinctive biogeophysical marine environments (abyssal sediments, seamount flanks, and hydrothermal vents, respectively), and presents an overview of their resource interest, extraction technologies, technical and environmental issues and international regulatory context, together with examples of innovative responses to these myriad challenges. A New Procedure for Deep Sea Mining Tailings Disposal

Deep sea mining tailings disposal is a new environmental challenge related to water pollution, mineral crust waste handling, and ocean biology. The objective of this paper is to propose a new tailings disposal procedure for the deep sea mining industry. Through comparisons of the tailings disposal methods which exist in on-land mining and the coastal mining fields, a new tailings disposal proce...

A New Method for Detecting Ships in Low Size and Low Contrast Marine Images: Using Deep Stacked Extreme Learning Machines

Detecting ships in marine images is an essential problem in maritime surveillance systems. Although several types of deep neural networks have almost ubiquitously used for this purpose, but the performance of such networks greatly drops when they are exposed to low size and low contrast images which have been captured by passive monitoring systems. On the other hand factors such as sea waves, c...

Digital Marine Bioprospecting: Mining New Neurotoxin Drug Candidates from the Transcriptomes of Cold-Water Sea Anemones

Marine bioprospecting is the search for new marine bioactive compounds and large-scale screening in extracts represents the traditional approach. Here, we report an alternative complementary protocol, called digital marine bioprospecting, based on deep sequencing of transcriptomes. We sequenced the transcriptomes from the adult polyp stage of two cold-water sea anemones, Bolocera tuediae and Ho...

Technological and Profitable Analysis of Airlifting in Deep Sea Mining Systems

Airlifting technology utilized in deep-sea mining (DSM) industry was proposed in the 70s of last century, which was triggered by the discovery of vast amounts of mineral resources on the seabed. The objective of this paper is to assess the technological feasibility and profitability analyses in terms of solid production rate, energy consumption per tonnage of mineral, and profitability per tonn...

Antarctic Marine Biodiversity and Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents

The diversity of many marine benthic groups is unlike that of most other taxa. Rather than declining from the tropics to the poles, much of the benthos shows high diversity in the Southern Ocean. Moreover, many species are unique to the Antarctic region. Recent work has shown that this is also true of the communities of Antarctic deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Vent ecosystems have been documented...
